Shelly's Story

I was introduced to painting by my mother, Mildred "Mille" Thompson, who was captivated by The Joy of Painting television series hosted by famous artist, Bob Ross. I spent many Saturday afternoons enjoying quality time with mom as we watched the transformation of one blank canvas after another into breathtakingly beautiful paintings. Many years ago, the dream was born, and Inspired Brushworks is the realization of that dream.

Although I have taken some lessons from professional artists, much of my painting knowledge has been self-taught through many days of trial and error at the easel. I enjoy painting a variety of subjects including landscapes, seascapes, portraits of pets and people, birds and wildlife, and still life scenes. There is always something new to paint with my brushes...so many fascinating scenes that God first created...and if I am successful at capturing only a hint of the beauty of His creations on canvas, then I have accomplished all I can hope to with my art.  Perhaps this endless source of inspiration is one reason I have found such passion for painting. Another reason lies in the fact that I can escape this hectic and demanding world and retreat to a world filled only with beauty each time I sit at my easel.

Most of my early works have been in the photorealistic style, but over the past few months, I've noticed my style evolving into abstract realism. I've yet to find the voice and specific style that I'm destined to create with, but since enrolling in the Milan Art Institute Mastery Program, I feel these emerging. I seem to be drawn to creating art that captures the beauty of the natural and spiritual worlds and the profound connections between them and all beings that reside within.

I've become fascinated with exploring, on canvas, the continuation of life after death and the ongoing connections we have with those who have gone before.  Over the past couple of years, I've spent many hours developing my own techniques for painting spirits. My original painting shown below, "Forever Faithful", earned 1st Place in the "All Creatures Great and Small" juried art show and, for me, demonstrates that anything can be accomplished with determination and practice.

Throughout my art journey, I have been blessed with a support group of family and friends who have celebrated my successes and provided encouragement during the times of frustration that often accompany a new venture.  Although God called mom to Heaven in 2014, she still remains a driving force behind all I inspire to achieve with my art. Even in her physical absence, I can feel her continue to encourage and push me to follow my dream and take that often intimidating next step. So you see, all of my creations are truly inspired brushworks.

Thanks for visiting my website and for supporting my desire to inspire the world through my art.
